"description": "Last week, the New York City Council decided to pass a city budget that shortchanges our most vulnerable students — all while the city’s students and schools still struggle to recover from the continued disruption of the pandemic. Email Mayor Adams now telling him he must restore the unnecessary and harmful cuts to public schools! Education cuts are never acceptable, but now is the worst possible time to be cutting funding from our children’s education. Prior to COVID, decades of underfunding from the state left New York City schools unable to provide students with the kinds of opportunities that would help them succeed. Today, schools in New York City are finally receiving full funding from the state, plus over $7 billion in federal aid. But the need for smaller class sizes, social and emotional supports, and enrichment opportunities such as arts, music, sports are more urgent than ever. The past two years of COVID have taken an enormous toll on students and families, and their needs have ballooned, from academic to social and emotional support. The City Council knows that New York City has the money to invest in public schools, but it has chosen not to. Despite a record increase in education funding going to the city, New York City’s students will be getting less funding per pupil next year — all because the Mayor and City Council decided to stand in the way. That is unacceptable. Email Mayor Adams now demanding that the cuts to public schools are restored in the budget.",
