"description": "SCHEDULED IN COMMITTEE MONDAY, MARCH 30 House Bill 485 by Representative Beryl Amedee would amend the Louisiana Constitution to make parental rights “fundamental rights,” triggering the highest level of judicial review for a wide range of laws affecting children. Parents play a central role in their children’s lives, and Louisiana law already recognizes those rights. HB 485 goes much further—making it significantly harder for the state to step in when a child’s health, safety, or even life is at risk. In cases of suspected medical neglect or abuse, timely intervention can be critical. By requiring the highest level of judicial review (strict scrutiny), this amendment could delay or block the ability of healthcare providers, schools, and child welfare agencies to act quickly to protect children. We tell children that if something is wrong, they should talk to a trusted adult. Health care providers, teachers, and social workers are a critical part of that safety net, and policies like this risk weakening it by creating uncertainty or hesitation about when they can act. Tell lawmakers to oppose HB 485 and protect the systems that keep children safe.",
