Head Start serves more than 700,000 children every year, providing preschool and childcare along with meals, health screenings, disability services, family support, and other resources for children from low-income families. For more than 60 years, strong federal standards have helped make sure children receive quality care no matter where they live. Trump’s new proposal would weaken or eliminate federal requirements covering class sizes, teacher qualifications, medical screenings, background checks, transportation practices, curriculum, and other protections. The administration also wants to cut administrative spending limits from 15% to 5%, threatening the staff and specialized services programs that rely on it. This follows the Project 2025 playbook. Trump’s allies have openly called for eliminating Head Start. Weakening its standards and hollowing out the services that distinguish Head Start from ordinary childcare brings them closer to that goal.
