"description": "CWA Local 1168 recently was informed by Kaleida Health that they are eliminating 96 Certified Medical Assistants right before the holidays. Theses CMAs have been working where patients need highly skilled attention at Buffalo General Hospital since the 1980s. The impact of these cuts is twofold fold. First, It’s bad for patients. These workers have college degrees and national certifications. Eliminating them will cause chaos throughout the hospital and deprive patients of the care they deserve. Second, these workers are caretakers - not only for their patients, but for their families too. These actions by Kaleida Health will be devastating to say the least. One of our members carries the insurance for her severely handicapped child doesn’t know what she’s going to do without it. Another one of our members is a proud grandmother who just got guardianship of her grandson and doesn’t know how she’s going to support him. One of the most devastating is a mother who sacrificed everything from a place to live to food while she was going to school in hopes of a better life now has to tell her kids it’ll be another season of going without. At the most basic level, our members are human beings and are worried about paying their school loans, their rent, their utilities, being able to feed their families, and support them. Kaleida is making these cuts to save money by attacking some of the lowest paid positions. Our position is that there are cost-saving measures that do not impact patient care. The top ten highly paid administrators make over 11 million while those at the bottom have to go home and tell their families that their holiday plans are going to be very different from what they expected. Lastly, our fellow PCAs are and always will be a valued member of our team at Buffalo General. We are all in this together. An injury to one is an injury to all. There are over 96 jobs on the chopping block. Please take a moment to send a note to our adminstrators, telling them this isn't acceptable.",
