"description": "SCR 1049 and SB 1751, sponsored by Senator Kevin Payne are active bills that would bring firing squads to Arizona and expand the use of lethal gas. These policies are cruel, extreme, and a step backward for our state. Arizona should be investing in real public safety solutions instead of trying to revive brutal execution methods. As currently written, the bills would allow a prisoner to be shot by three people standing just 15 feet away and change current law requiring everyone on death row to choose between firing squad, lethal gas, or lethal injection as their method of execution. Only five states currently authorize firing squads: Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Utah. Arizona should not become the next. Arizona refurbished its gas chamber in 2019. It uses hydrogen cyanide gas—the same chemical used by the Nazis in concentration camps. Arizona has a choice to make: move backward by allowing executions by firing squad and expanding the use of lethal gas, or stand for a higher standard of decency and reject both.",
