"description": "On June 18, Chicago City Council is scheduled to vote on an unconstitutional snap curfew that would hand the Chicago Police Department new powers to criminalize young people There’s no shortage of laws that dictate what young people can and can't do or what police can confront them for. We do, however, have a shortage of civic investments — schools, youth jobs, after school programs, and more — that allow young people to thrive. Police shouldn’t be the main tool or investment our city uses to impact young people, who deserve mentorship, investment, and space to imagine big things for the young adults they will become. More intense policing — which is what curfews enable — isn't the message to send young people about what they deserve. Instead, let's pause this rush to snap curfews and turn our sights to solutions like preserving and expanding youth jobs — one of the most data-backed ways to reduce community violence. Let’s invest in youth-envisioned solutions like the Peacebook which could train even more young people in the work of peer-led violence prevention and deescalation while giving them the experience of responsibility in the process. Call or email these undecided alderpersons NOW to encourage them to OPPOSE any new snap curfew and instead invest in young people and communities!",
