"description": "On June 12th, 2024, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) laid off 61 bargaining unit members of the SPLC Union. With years of funds in reserve, these layoffs were a targeted attempt to break the SPLC Union. Additionally, the gutting of the SPLC’s Learning for Justice program; support staff in Development, Creative, Legal; and the eradication of immigrant justice legal teams at such a critical time will have long-lasting effects on communities across the Deep South and the US. After the layoffs, the SPLC Union held a Vote of No Confidence in SPLC CEO Margaret Huang. 90% of voting SPLC Union bargaining unit staff — 141 of the 156 voting members, representing a majority of the unit — have expressed that they have NO CONFIDENCE in Huang’s leadership due to her central role in these disastrous layoffs. This follows similar results from two prior surveys conducted by SPLC’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion department which found that only 49% of staff had faith in SPLC leadership in 2022, and that 44% had faith in leadership in March 2024. After the Union presented this vote to the SPLC Board and called for Huang to be fired, Board Chair Karen Baynes-Dunning sent a dispassionate email in response, saying “[Board members] unanimously reaffirm our approval of this strategic direction and unanimously support Margaret Huang’s ongoing leadership as President & CEO.” She declined the Union’s invitation to engage further. Read the full Vote of No Confidence press release HERE. Stand with the workers of the SPLC. Call on the organization’s Board to: 1) Remove Margaret Huang as CEO of Southern Poverty Law Center. 2) Bargain with the SPLC Union to reverse layoffs for affected staff who choose to stay. 3) Meaningfully involve the SPLC Union in finding, interviewing, and hiring a new CEO.",
