"description": "Yamacraw Village residents deserve safe housing immediately. But the Housing Authority of Savannah is moving toward demolition without first guaranteeing enforceable protections for the families who live there, especially a binding right-to-return and a guaranteed rebuild of deeply affordable homes that current residents can actually afford. This is bigger than Yamacraw. HUD’s own analysis shows Savannah is short more than 17,000 homes relative to need. And based on the limited public data HAS has shared, Savannah has seen roughly 1,700 public housing units “replaced” with only about 760 public–private partnership units, most of them mixed-income. That is a net loss of nearly 1,000 deeply affordable homes over the last several decades. This letter asks your City Council member to publicly support Yamacraw residents and demand basic protections before any demolition moves forward: A legally binding right-to-return for current residents who want it A guaranteed rebuild of deeply affordable homes tied to residents’ incomes, not “affordable” at AMI levels that price residents out A relocation plan that is realistic in Savannah’s market and does not treat vouchers as a substitute for actual housing near jobs, schools, and support networks",
