"description": "Arts education has been gutted in many of America’s public schools. Studies find that arts education boosts learning and achievement for children, especially students from economically disadvantaged circumstances. However, many of these students don’t have access in their underfunded schools. According to Champions of Change: The Impact of the Arts on Learning, a compilation of studies on the impact of arts on learning, students who participate in the arts outperform their peers in virtually every measure. Researchers found that sustained learning in music and theater correlates to greater success in math and reading, and students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds see the greatest benefits. In fact, learning the arts can help level the playing field for young people from disadvantaged circumstances. Art and music programs help to keep kids in school, foster engagement, enhance collaboration, strengthen the sense of belonging, and improve motor, spatial, and language skills. A study by the College Board showed that students who took four years of art scored 91 points better on the SAT exams. Senator Cory Booker and Rep. Nydia Velazquez have introduced the Guarantee Access to Arts and Music Education Act of 2023 (GAAME Act, S.364/H.R. 969). These bills would bolster the number of certified music and arts educators, purchase equipment for music and art courses, provide further professional development for arts educators, and improve access to sequential, standards-based arts and music education. Take a stand for the arts, tell your member of Congress to support the GAAME Act today!",
