"description": "BlackRock is an “asset manager” that controls more than $10 trillion (yes, trillion) in assets. It uses the fig leaf of ‘passivity’ as a workaround to avoid meaningful oversight, even as it buys extraordinary amounts of stock in literally everything. It’s a bit complicated, but understanding how BlackRock works is key to understanding how our economy is distorted. BlackRock is one of the “Big Three” asset management companies that use money invested in pension funds and 401ks to ensure that corporations stay on a pro-shareholder, anti-worker path. But despite each of the Big Three having ownership shares in the other two companies, and despite all of them having significant amounts of shares in virtually every major American company, they are not accountable to the public. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which ensures Americans don’t lose their money when big banks fail, voted in July to advance a proposal to apply stricter regulations to asset managers that own 10 percent or more of banks. Under this proposal, companies that choose to continue identifying as passive investors would no longer enjoy the ability to self-certify its passive agenda. It would have to prove that it is not exploiting its holdings to influence the direction of virtually every company with a publicly traded stock. Find out how BlackRock secretly uses its “passive” investments to prop up its corporate agenda, then take action to support the FDIC’s rule to fight back!",
