	"description": "Across the country, in states like Florida, Texas, and Ohio, Republicans have been attacking higher education, limiting the teaching of courses and topics from Critical Race Theory to even just basic Black history, restricting or ending faculty tenure, and defunding and banning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Leading to headlines like this: Now, Republicans in U.S. House are working to implement these nationwide and they’re using the much-needed reauthorization of the Higher Education Act to try and force it through both Houses of Congress. They know they can’t win with one sweeping bill, so they’re trying to break it up across several bills in hopes that one or more of them make it through. First up: the Defending Education Transparency and Ending Rogue Regimes Engaging in Nefarious Transactions (DETERRENT) Act, spearheaded by Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx, claims to “combat foreign influence on college campuses,” but what it really does is institutionalize xenophobia and discrimination. The American Council on Education (ACE) calls it a thinly veiled assault on academic freedom. Democrats on the House Education committee say it would “fan the flames of hate against Asian Americans” as the bill singles out the “Chinese Communist Party” as if suddenly China is trying to take over higher education.   Republicans are putting Asian Americans in the crosshairs of bigotry in an attempt to demonize woke policies in higher education and directly attack on the principles of diversity and inclusivity.
