"description": "Hillsdale College, a hub of radical right-wing ideology, is weaponizing education against the very ideals of truth and critical thinking. The core project is their 1776 Curriculum, which downplays the brutality and significance of slavery in America, skews the portrayal of women's suffrage, and disingenuously claims that the Civil War was just about ‘states’ rights. Noted historian Sean Wilentz of Princeton University has criticized it for warping American history and prioritizing indoctrination over genuine education -- and he’s right. It paints an overtly rosy and inaccurate picture of the Founding Fathers. Misrepresenting figures like Jefferson, Madison, and Washington in the context of their stances on slavery is agenda-driven revisionist history. Yet, in a deeply divisive decision marked by a narrow 5-4 vote, the Pennridge School Board has not only adopted this curriculum but has also expanded its influence beyond ninth-grade social studies to span multiple grades and subjects. This rushed and expanded implementation immediately faced significant backlash, including from Pennridge Superintendent David Bolton -- who subsequently resigned in protest. Jenna Vitale, the district’s K-12 social studies supervisor, and numerous community members, parents, and students are still fighting to repeal the School Board’s decision and they need our help. Unfortunately, the Penridge School Board isn’t alone in adopting this right-wing revisionist history as their curriculum. Over 8,400 educators have downloaded this content nationwide and states like Florida, South Dakota, and Tennessee are also implementing parts of the 1776 Curriculum. From politicians like Ron DeSantis to far-right groups like Moms for Liberty, there’s an orchestrated attempt to rewrite history. With our national education system teetering dangerously close to becoming a machinery for far-right propaganda, we must fight back.
