"description": "Millions of Americans are suffering under the affordability crisis. Urge your representative to co-sponsor and pass the Living Wage for All Act to take a big step in putting an end to it. Prices for essentials like rent, utilities, gas and more are on the rise these days.1 That wouldn’t be a problem if Americans made enough money at their jobs to meet the moment. But unfortunately, they do not. According to the MIT Living Wage Calculator, single adults need to earn at least $25 an hour to afford essentials, and about 45-50% of the country earns less than that.2,3 The Living Wage for All Act will go a long way in putting the fire out on the affordability crisis. Introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressmembers Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03), Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04), Lateefah Simon (CA-12), Analilia Mejia (NJ-11), and a number of other co-sponsors, the legislation would gradually increase the federal minimum wage to $25 an hour, with a faster phase-in period for large, highly profitable corporations; end subminimum wages of every kind; and index the minimum wage to two-thirds of the national median hourly wage. This landmark legislation would go a long way in helping millions of working people across the country. As a matter of principle, one 40-hour-a-week job should be enough for people to afford the basics. That should hold true everywhere, but particularly in the richest country in the history of the world. But the Living Wage for All Act is not just a good idea from a moral standpoint—it’s also a good idea from an economic standpoint as well. Our economy is driven by consumer demand, so we need people to have enough money in their pockets to spend on products and services, or else our businesses all over the country will flounder. There is a lot that lawmakers need to do to end the crisis, but raising the minimum wage to a living wage is a necessary first step. That’s why the Living Wage for All Act is so desperately needed. Click “Start Writing” to send a message to your representatives urging them to co-sponsor and pass the Living Wage for All Act today.
