"description": "The Saskatchewan government has abruptly announced the end of mask requirements in SHA homes and facilities. This is a reckless act that will lead to more illness, more disability, and more death in Saskatchewan from COVID-19. Healthcare settings should be accessible and as safe as possible for those seeking care, but also those who are working or supporting a family member. Removing masking increases risks for all, but especially those who are medically vulnerable and disabled. Across North America, mortality from COVID-19 acquired in-hospital, estimated at 10%, is already a serious problem. Approximately 10% of people who get infected with Sars-COV-2 go on to experience Long COVID symptoms that last between 12 weeks and years, often preventing the person from returning to work. Extra numbers of people seriously ill with COVID-19 squeeze our public healthcare system further, delaying critical care for other illnesses and burning out our healthcare staff, exacerbating an already critical shortage of healthcare personnel. Stopping the transmission of COVID-19 requires more and better masking, not less. There is no valid scientific rationale or benefit for patient, staff, and visitor safety by removing mask requirements. Keep Saskatchewan strong and safe and challenge the SHA to honour its commitment to safety. Tell the Saskatchewan government and SHA that you support keeping masks in medical settings.",
