"description": "At AFT Vermont, we believe that in the richest country in the history of the world, no individual should be denied access to healthcare or higher education. We know that these goals are achievable. Globally, over 70 countries have some form of universal healthcare (1) and 46 countries have some form of free college education (2). Meanwhile, in the U.S. we have the most expensive healthcare and higher education systems in the world (3, 4). In Vermont, our health insurance premiums are the most expensive in the country (5), and our state ranks near the bottom in state financial investment for higher education per student (6). The U.S. also has the largest disparity of wealth between the rich and the poor than any other developed nation (7). Our system is broken, and we must take steps to fix it. Last year, instead of addressing these or any other issues affecting working Americans, Congress and President Trump passed massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. At a time where working Americans are facing the pressures of rising costs of food, housing, transportation, healthcare, and education, it is unconscionable to cut funding to the programs that we rely on in order for the rich to have more money in their pockets. Now more than ever, it’s time to ask the wealthiest Vermonters to pay their fair share. We have a chance to take back the money lost through these federal tax cuts to fund our State Government. By raising taxes on the wealthiest Vermonters, we can fund our healthcare and higher education systems and relieve the pressure on working Vermonter’s pocketbooks. Reach out to your State Representatives and Senators and let them know that you support increasing taxes on the rich!",
