"description": "Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are lifelines for millions of individuals, families, and children. And -- thanks to the slim majority in the House of Representatives -- those lifelines are at a great risk of being cut. Starting this April, states must resume determining eligibility for Medicaid and CHIP for 90 million beneficiaries. We know from past experience that millions of people may not be able to navigate this system, even though a great many will remain eligible, and some states, such as Florida, will be more interested in reducing their Medicaid caseload than in helping people either to continue benefits or to be transferred to other forms of insurance. It’s estimated that 15 million people will be at risk of losing Medicaid coverage. The majority of those projected to lose coverage will be people of color, including 4.6 million Latinos, 2.2 million African Americans, and nearly a million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and large numbers will lose health coverage despite remaining eligible. In one of his concessions to win over right-wing members of his caucus and win the Speaker’s gavel, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) agreed to hold the debt ceiling increase hostage in order to extract cuts from critical social programs. Although cuts to Social Security and Medicare have proved to be punishingly unpopular, the threats to Medicaid and CHIP remain quite real. So, on top of the threat that millions will lose Medicaid soon, some extremists in Congress want to make it even worse. We’re still dealing with the ramifications of a once-in-a -century deadly worldwide pandemic. Millions of people are living with the effects of Long COVID. Medicaid is the biggest source of funding for substance use disorder treatment. More than half of America’s children receive their health care through Medicaid/CHIP. What we really need is to invest in providing health coverage to people with low incomes and to make sure that care-givers can get decent pay. Instead, some in Congress want to put a stranglehold on Medicaid by capping its funds, or to deny Medicaid to people with unstable work histories. Eliminating the health insurance of millions of people with low incomes is unconscionable. Access to health care is an inalienable right. We cannot allow one political party with the slimmest of majorities -- that’s controlled by an extreme faction -- to cruelly deny health coverage to millions of people.
