"description": "One year ago, eight organizations from the left and the right of the political spectrum joined together to make a push to reform America’s criminal justice system. With billions of misallocated taxpayer dollars and an exploding prison population, it was clearer than ever that our system was badly broken and needed urgent reforms. Over the past year, a dozen states have led the way, passing much-needed reforms. But similar action at the federal level is long overdue. It’s been over 250 days since legislation was introduced and we are running out of time for Congress to act! We’re working hard to get this done -- here’s how you can help us: Contact your congressional representatives and urge them to pass justice reform. Conservative-led states like Oklahoma and Iowa have led the charge by reforming their sentencing laws, and even the state with the country’s highest incarceration rate, Louisiana, is smoothing the path to employment for returning citizens. Most recently, Kentucky instituted a criminal justice policy assessment council to reform the state’s penal code while its neighbor Ohio is also undertaking a comprehensive review of its justice system to improve public safety and make the laws fairer and more effective. We’ve also seen success in states like Michigan and Pennsylvania and our polling in these key battleground states eliminate any doubt that there is a mandate for reform. In today’s political climate, lawmakers disagree on many issues, but criminal justice reform is not one of them. As many leaders have said in the past, let’s focus not on our differences but on what we can agree. Thanks for helping us get this far. We’re not finished yet! Together, we can transform this country!",
