"description": "On July 30, 1965, Medicare and Medicaid were signed into law. Sixty-one years later, these programs provide health coverage to a combined 130 million people. Medicaid covers 1 in 5 people in the United States, including nearly half of all children. It helps pay for nursing home care, pregnancy and childbirth, cancer treatment, medications, mental health services, home-based care, medical equipment, and other essential services. Instead of protecting Medicaid, Congress enacted devastating cuts that will terminate coverage for millions of people and place 446 hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes at risk of closing or cutting services. Burdensome work reporting requirements will make the damage even worse. People will be forced to repeatedly prove that they are working, attending school, caring for someone, or too sick to work. Even people with cancer, HIV, disabilities, and other serious health conditions could lose coverage because they could not complete complicated paperwork or secure an exemption in time. Most Medicaid recipients who can work already do. These requirements are paperwork barriers that will cause eligible people to lose health care. On the 61st anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, Congress must restore the promise of these programs and strengthen our health programs to make them seamless, fair, and accountable.
