"description": "The RAYS Act requires middle and high schools that receive federal funding to include suicide prevention information such as the 988 crisis line on school IDs. By adding crucial suicide prevention information to Student I.D.s, we can ensure at-risk students are aware of and empowered to explore options to care for their own wellbeings. All students deserve the right to have the resources to receive help both before and during times of crisis; this bill places information regarding those resources in the palm of their hands. Aside from physical support, the legislation provides a platform for educational institutions to normalize discussions regarding mental health and wellbeing from a young age. When peers feel that their needs are being advocated for by institutions through information sharing, they may feel more empowered to reach out for help, mitigating the effects of implicit assumptions that may deter them from seeking such support. This bill is simple and offers help to students who may be in need during moments of crisis. While this may seem like a small piece of legislation, it provides hope. If it saves even one life, it will be worth it. Not only can this bill give more resources to students, but it further opens up the conversation about suicide and can reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.",
