"description": "A photograph taken through the windows of Air Force One shows President Trump reviewing a large printout that appears to read “Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED.” Hours earlier, he told reporters the Kennedy Center could be “ripped down” unless his administration is “recognized” on a building Congress dedicated as a living memorial to John F. Kennedy. Lawyers for Rep. Joyce Beatty, a Kennedy Center trustee challenging Trump’s takeover of the board, filed the photograph in federal court Thursday. Trump’s Justice Department has already told the court the building could be demolished and replaced with an outdoor amphitheater if the board does not get its way on renovations and naming. This is what it looks like when billionaires buy elections and then come to collect. In 2024, just 100 billionaire families spent $2.6 billion on federal races, one of every six dollars spent by everyone combined. They got a $4.5 trillion Trump-GOP tax law that steers about $1 trillion to the top 1%. Billionaire wealth has since surged past $9 trillion. The same 2025 tax-and-spending package that delivered those giveaways put about $257 million in taxpayer renovation money into the Kennedy Center. Working people paid for that work. Giant corporations and billionaire donors walked away with the tax cuts. Now the president who signed their windfall is tying the building’s survival to whether he gets his name on a national memorial. A federal judge has already ruled that Congress reserved this memorial for Kennedy, and that trustees cannot memorialize Trump there without Congress. Congress created the Kennedy Center, wrote its name into law, and appropriated the renovation money. Lawmakers can prohibit those tax dollars from financing demolition. They can change the board’s powers, who sits on it, and how large it is. They can abolish the board if that is what it takes. Tell Congress to do whatever it takes to stop Trump and his handpicked board from demolishing the Kennedy Center.",
