Our city still runs on dirty coal thanks to a broken promise to stop. After years of pressure from the community, the Austin City Council in 2014 committed to shutting down Austin Energy's portion of the coal-burning Fayette power plant by the end of 2022. This pledge is a cornerstone of meeting the city’s community-wide climate goals. However, in November 2021, Austin Energy recommended that the City Council reject the exit offer made by Fayette’s co-owner, the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). The City Council accepted the recommendation, keeping Austin is still running Fayette today. The public never even saw LCRA’s offer. Was it really too much to pay, given the state of the climate crisis? Could the cost have been affordably spread over 5-10 years? And why is Austin Energy still approving budgets to run the plant, without any Council oversight? You deserve answers to those questions. Join us in urging the Austin City Council to do its job as Austin Energy’s governing body and hold the utility accountable for meeting this important necessary part of meeting the city’s climate goals.",
