"description": "The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) has proposed a draft wastewater discharge permit for Shintech’s PVC plant located in West Baton Rouge and Iberville Parishes. If this permit is granted, it would decrease the frequency of pollution monitoring and allow Shintech to release wastewater and stormwater into the Mississippi River and Bayou Bourbeaux, posing even greater risks to communities concerning water safety, public health, and the environment. Families residing near the Addis plant are already dealing with high levels of toxic emissions, facing some of the highest cancer rates in the nation, and are now confronted with increased dangers to their water and livelihoods. Should this permit be approved, more pollutants will be introduced into the Mississippi River, which is heavily relied upon for fishing, drinking, and community livelihoods. Shintech currently plays a significant role in Louisiana’s vinyl chloride pollution, and this permit would exacerbate the situation. We cannot allow this to happen.",
