"description": "Climate Action California and the Sierra Club are working in a broad coalition opposing AB 306, a wrong-headed and unnecessary bill that will freeze nearly all updates to building codes—at the state AND local levels—until the early 2030s. The bill's authors, Assembly Member Nick Schultz and Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas, claim that the bill will make rebuilding Los Angeles faster and cheaper. We and many others strongly disagree. The bill passed the Assembly and is now in the Senate, awaiting hearings in the Housing and Local Government Committees. Because this is "the Speaker's bill," it has a lot of momentum. All of us need to weigh in with our representatives and urge them to vote NO on a bill that will make it harder for municipalities to pass code updates that make buildings safer, more fire-resilient, and often less costly to build. AB 306 would stop in their tracks many new or revisited "reach codes," designed to reduce dual-fuel construction and incentivize all-electric buildings. Read our OPPOSE letter for organizations here. Everyone can use this form to send a brief personal note to our Senators asking them to vote NO on AB 306 when it comes before them. Click on "Start Writing" for talking points and to get started. Members of the two oversight committees that will hear the bill before July 19 (perhaps as early as June 24) REALLY need to get the message! Their names, district numbers, and phone numbers are below. If one of these is "yours," please make a quick call to the Sacramento office and tell the phone-answerer you are a constituent who really wants your Senator to vote NO on AB 306 in committee. Of course you can click on "Start Writing" to send a quick email too! If you aren't sure who your Senator is, click here to find out.
