	"description": "The livelihoods of thousands of transportation workers have been disrupted by COVID since its onset this past spring. Our brothers and sisters at Amtrak are the latest to have their lives upended by this pandemic. Nearly 2,000 of the carrier’s unionized workers, including 500 SMART brothers and sisters were targeted recent furloughs that went into effect on October 1. To make matters worse, Amtrak is cutting service at a moment when people in the Midwest and others who may not feel comfortable flying need an alternative and accessible means of transport that only Amtrak can provide. SMART members came together to fight these announced furloughs through a number of powerful demonstrations last week at the US Capitol and at stations in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Michigan and Wisconsin. We know that Congress, particularly the U.S. Senate, has the power to preserve jobs and throw Amtrak workers and the carriers a lifeline. H.R. 2, the Moving Forward Act, and the HEROES Act 2 both have provisions to help Amtrak workers whose jobs are jeopardized and the transportation industry as a whole as our nation struggles with the COVID pandemic. However, we need Mitch McConnell and the Republican Congress to stop roadblocking these solutions and to act for the sake for the nation’s passenger carrier and for transportation workers. Please take action to ensure this measure gets a vote in the Senate. McConnell is currently blocking this legislation and keeping it from a fair, up or down vote. We need to let all our Senators know times like this demand action and we ask them to urge McConnell to bring this legislation to a vote.",
