"description": "For the first time in its history, the city will receive full Foundation Aid for public schools from New York State. But did you know that charters are receiving a disproportionate percentage of the school aid increase? Email your State Legislators now and tell them to reject Governor Hochul’s proposal to raise the charter cap! In the 2022-23 school year alone, 57% of the increase in state aid for NYC went toward charter schools, which educate just 14% of the students. If we open more charters, that disparity will widen. And that means that the Foundation Aid funding that we fought so long and hard for will not have its intended impact. And the fact is: We don’t need new charters — there are enough schools, public and charter, to go around. Enrollment is down in both New York City’s traditional and charter schools, due to larger social trends like the declining population of school age children, and families moving out of cities to the suburbs all across the country. Not expanding charters isn’t about taking away the individual choice for families. Not adding additional charters will not affect the schools that are already open. But because of the way charter schools are funded in New York City in particular, any expansion of charter schools will negatively impact the overall budget for traditional public schools. New York City is the only district in the nation required to pay rent for charter schools, and the only school district in the state that does not receive aid from the state, called charter school transition aid, to offset the costs. And what about the parents who are also making a choice when they enroll their children in public school? Every day millions of parents are choosing their public school. We need to shift our focus from adding more charters, to how we can improve the public school system for all children, using the best ideas that successful public and charter schools have used. In wealthy districts, public schools are the norm, because when they are well funded, they work. And the goal — for all of us — should be how to preserve a public education system that is available to all, publicly funded, publicly run, and accountable to all of us.
