"description": "The Legislature overruled two overwhelming votes of GRU ratepayers. They’re hoping people forget. We’re not going to forget. Over 75% of voters in 2025 chose local accountability for GRU after two years of public debate and huge turnout. But in the final week of session that vote was overturned by HB 1451 and the voice of GRU ratepayers was taken away. Every member of the Alachua County Legislative Delegation except Rep. Yvonne Hayes Hinson supported taking away your vote and your voice. Today, GRU ratepayers are still paying their bills, but they no longer have a real say over their utility and have no meaningful state protections. The DeSantis-appointed GRU Authority does not listen to us. They mock us. The lecture us. And they rubber stamp whatever the GRU boss wants them to. There is no other utility in the country where customers are in this position. Even customers of private utilities in Florida, for example, can seek protections from the state Public Services Commission. And the consequences are already showing up, higher rates, higher taxes, and cut services, all while GRU uses our ratepayer money like a slush fund for their political pet projects. For example, they used our money to hire two separate lobbying firms to overturn our elections through HB 1451. This is what happens when ratepayers lose their voice. Jennifer Bradley, Stan McClain, and Chad Johnson supported the amendment that took that voice away. They made this decision. Responsibility for what happens next rests with them. But we need to first put them on notice. So, starting now we are asking all GRU ratepayers to contact the Alachua County Legislative Delegation with any concerns about how GRU is being run, billing errors, service problems, and anything else you think they need to know. This starts with making three reasonable demands today: Actively oversee and hold the GRU Authority accountable. They do not answer to us, which means that responsibility now falls to them. Engage directly with us before making major decisions about the future of our utility. Pay close attention to what is happening at GRU. Rates have not gone down, debt has not been meaningfully reduced since the City Commission executed their debt reduction plan, and we are deeply concerned about how decisions are being made. Email your legislators. Demand accountability for GRU.",
