"description": "Theatre artists around the country are hurting. From actors on Broadway to stage managers at local theatres, thousands of members of Actors’ Equity Association have been affected by the closures and cancelations due to COVID-19. In New York, for example, unemployment claims for the entertainment industry went up 3,880% in the last week of March compared to last year, making it the industry with the third-highest increase of claims in the state. With no definitive end in sight, many workers are worried how they will feed their families, let alone acquire the security of health insurance. For Equity members qualifying for insurance is tied to how many weeks out of the year an actor or stage manager works. With those weeks totally disrupted, tens of thousands of theatre artists stand to lose access to health care. The Worker Health Coverage Protection Act is a key step to ensuring that these artists can still get access to health insurance. This bill provides coverage for the full cost of the often-expensive COBRA premiums for workers who normally receive coverage through their job, but have lost work. The arts are a huge economic driver in cities in towns all across the country. The typical arts attendee spends another $31.47 per person, per event, beyond the cost of admission. This spending supported 2.3 million jobs, provided $46.6 billion in household income, and generated $15.7 billion in total government revenue, according to Americans for the Arts.1 But the arts cannot go back to work without a healthy workforce. With your help, we can let Congress know that passing this Act is important, that it helps bridge the gap for artists out of work through no fault of their own, and will help the entire economy when it is safe to go back to work. Theatre workers can’t wait to return to making art and entertaining audiences. But right now, they need your support so that they and their families can stay healthy. 1 “AEP5: National Findings.” Americans for the Arts, 15 May 2019.",
