	"description": "What is this about? The Federal Government has committed to underwrite an insurance product for Privately Practising Midwives (PPMs) attending ‘low risk’ homebirths. PPMs estimate that between 70 and 80% of their current client base would be considered medium to high risk. We are lobbying the government to ensure that ALL women can access homebirth with a midwife, regardless of ‘risk’. In the words of our fabulous homebirth elder, Elaine Norling, &quot;we can&#x27;t afford to take our foot off the accelerator&quot;. Your story has had impact The government consultation closed on the 12th of August and during our recent trip to Parliament House in Canberra, the Members of Parliament (MPs) were keen to hear about how the proposed insurance changes will impact women who live in their electorates. Politicians and decision makers have been impressed with the Homebirth Survey Report where nearly 6,000 women and midwives told us what they thought. You have been such a vital part of this movement to protect homebirth as a choice for all mothers. This was all only possible because we came together to demand change. And we can’t stop now. Federal MPs have heard from us. Now they need to hear directly from you. We need to come together now to meet with our MPs and tell them how these changes to homebirth will affect you directly. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered We know it can sound scary or intimidating to meet with politicians, but they meet with the public all the time. It is their job. To make it easier, we have created a guide to follow for writing to your Federal MP to request a meeting. There is strength in numbers. Connect with your local homebirth group and meet with your MP together. HBA is here to support you through this process. We can give you a pre-meeting brief, help you connect with others in your local area or even dial into your meeting via Zoom for additional support.
