"description": "As many as two million wild kangaroos are killed in Australia every year for their skins—often shot at night in remote areas with little or no regulation, with many suffering prolonged and painful deaths. Orphaned joeys are frequently bludgeoned or left to die after their mothers are killed. All of this is to supply leather for soccer cleats and other commercial products. Shockingly, many of these kangaroo-derived goods are imported and sold right here in the United States. We have a real opportunity to stop this needless cruelty. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) have introduced the Kangaroo Protection Act, federal legislation that would ban the import and sale of kangaroo products in the US.. Despite having similar import bans for other wild animals, the US. is currently the second largest commercial market for kangaroo leather products in the world. This bill builds on progress already being made. In recent years, Nike, Adidas, Puma, New Balance, Mizuno, ASICS, Diadora, Sokito, and Umbro have all committed to ending the use of kangaroo leather in their products. But without this legislation, kangaroos could still be brutally killed to be used in gloves, handbags, boots, and even pet food. The Senate needs to act. In Senator Duckworth’s words, “The mass killing of millions of kangaroos to make commercial products is needless and inhumane—and we must do better.” Wild kangaroos are not a commodity—they are sentient animals deserving of protection. With cruelty-free alternatives readily available and leading athletic brands already transitioning away from this supply chain, there is no justification for continuing these imports. Please email your senators and help end the kangaroo skin trade in the United States. We have set up a simple tool that makes it easy to send an email with just a few clicks.",
