"description": "On Thursday, March 21st, the Gainesville City Commission voted 6-0 (Commissioner Duncan-Walker was absent) to begin the process of letting voters decide the future of our community-owned utility. The motion was to direct the city attorney to come back to the Commission with a draft ordinance allowing Gainesville residents to vote on whether they want to keep the new unelected GRUA or to return control to the democratically elected City Commission. While this is a major victory for home rule in Gainesville, the road ahead will have many obstacles-the Commission voted only to begin the process of putting the referendum on the ballot. They will make a final decision over the course of several meetings. Ultimately, six of the seven Commissioners must vote in favor of the referendum twice in order for it to go before the people. Still, this was a huge, necessary step in the direction of restoring democracy over half of our city. Please take a moment to thank all of the Commissioners who attended the 3/21 meeting for standing up for home rule.",
