"description": "On Friday, October 17, Portland City Councilors held a press conference to announce the launch of a national pledge to investigate local economic and infrastructural ties to the genocide in Gaza. Half of Portland City Council signed the pledge: Council Vice President Tiffany Koyama Lane and Councilors Candace Avalos, Jamie Dunphy, Mitch Green, Sameer Kanal, and Angelita Morillo. They are calling on their Portland colleagues, as well as city officials across the nation, to make the same commitment. This pledge is not only a crucial first step in disrupting America’s economic and political role in the devastation of Gaza and the illegal occupation of Palestinian lands, it is a turning point for local investment in the institutions and infrastructure that enable the kidnapping of our neighbors by ICE. Already, anti-Palestinian groups and other electeds are pressuring these councilors to back away from this simple commitment to justice. Please take two minutes to thank them for taking action to end Portland’s complicity in genocide. Use the provided template or write your own message below. Then, click through and send a letter to the six who did not sign the pledge, asking them to stand up for Gaza and for international law.",
