"description": "We are all shocked and dismayed by the events of the past week. But the reality exists, black and brown people are treated differently in all walks of life but most especially in our legal system. While there are a multitude of good, honest, and fair police officers there are others that do not perform their sworn duties in a fair and ethical manner. These officers must be accountable for their actions. Our history in Jacksonville is one of disparate and unfair treatment of black and brown people. To learn more read Nate Monroe's, Times Union, recent article on broken promises. This disparate treatment includes excessive policing and fear tactics used in the black community. Young people are traumatized by random stops by the actions of rogue officers, seeking to bully and exert their power everyday. There have been six (6) JSO Officer involved shootings this year and there are 18 cases of JSO Shootings still open at the State Attorney's Office. While other Florida police agencies allow FDLE to investigate their officer involved shootings, JSO does not. JSO investigates their own and are not willing to release body camera footage even on closed cases. Activist and community leaders have called for change for years and CITY LEADERS HAVE IGNORED THE CALL. We need your help to call on our city leaders and demand change. Please take a few minutes and send this email, see red Start Writing button, to City Council Members, Sheriff Mike Williams, and Mayor Curry. You can edit the email to include your personal thoughts. They must act now to bring about sustained, positive change in our community.",
