"description": "West Virginia friends and family, we have an emergency looming before us. The COVID-19 pandemic has been both physically and economically devastating in our country, and as with most things the most vulnerable among us have been hit the hardest. Nearly 1/3 of US renters didn't make rent in the month of April, and those numbers could look even worse in West Virginia. In a recent social media poll for renters conducted by Our Future WV, 66% of respondents expressed worry that they wouldn't be able to pay rent in May or June. West Virginia's courts have been closed for most purposes including evictions since March but they are set to open again in just one week on Monday, May 18. With this reopening could come a wave of evictions for struggling tenants and a wave of homelessness unlike anything the state has ever seen before. Coupled with that is financial ruin for landlords as they lose thousands of tenants, and are left with empty rentals and no one to fill them. Our state is already teetering on the brink with massive budget deficits, and if thousands of our neighbors are forced onto the street helping them get back on their feet will be many times harder than keeping them whole now.
