"description": "Connecticut Senate Bill 8 and House Bill 6904 would make striking workers eligible for unemployment benefits after two weeks on strike. Build the middle class. Protect workers’ rights to negotiate fair contracts Reduce employer power to starve out striking workers. Encourage fair contracts without prolonged strikes. Ensure that unions can raise the standard for all workers! UNITE HERE Local 217 Connecticut has created thousands of middle-class jobs. In 2024, Local 217 members at the University of New Haven, the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale, and the Hyatt Regency Greenwich had to go on strike to win what they deserve, and won better health care, retirement, and raises of up to 15% in the first year. We also have a proud history of labor peace: Local 217 won some of the best contracts for cafeteria workers in the country during a sustained period of labor peace, and the New Haven Public Schools recently settled a good contract with cafeteria workers without forcing them out on strike. SB 8 and HB 6904 encourage all employers to negotiate excellent contracts in good faith, and defends our rights as union members. By evening the playing field and encouraging negotiation, this legislation may decrease the number of strikes. Governor Lamont and our state representatives chose to stand on the side of striking workers by joining our picket lines this year. Now they must stand on the side of all workers by supporting SB 8 and HB 6904. A strong middle class starts with strong unions—SB 8 and HB 6904 make that possible.",
