"description": "BRONZEVILLE, CHICAGO - - PIP Realty group has issued long-term tenants, mostly low-income black seniors, no-fault termination of tenancy notices. This is an example of the ongoing displacement of residents from the historic community of Bronzeville, part of the wave of unjust evictions resulting from Governor Pritzker’s lifting of the eviction moratorium, and the use of no-fault termination notices highlights the need to pass legislation such as Just Cause for Eviction, a piece of legislation currently being discussed in City Council that would prevent tenants from being displaced through no fault of their own, an outcome which impacts 10,000 Chicago households each year. Tenants are demanding that PIP Realty Group: 1. Give tenants the right to remain in the apartments they have called home for decades -or- 2. Offer tenants relocation assistance to ease the financial burdens of moving -and- 3. Offer compensation to tenants who have moved for the expenses they incurred as the result of these actions PIP Realty group bought this building during the pandemic and within 3 months issued tenants no-fault termination notices. No fault notices are a common tool of gentrification across the city, often used to displace long term black and brown residents to make way for building renovations and re-renting the building at rents unaffordable to community members. Due to the high cost of moving and a desire to remain in the neighborhood they have long called their home, tenants are demanding a meeting with PIP Realty to discuss relocation assistance or continued lease agreements that reflect their right to remain in their homes. Tenants describes the experience of such a notice: “I lived in this one building for 30 years. I’ve always paid rent on time, never failed a unit inspection, and made no unreasonable demands or complaints during my tenancy. They’re kicking everyone in the building out for no valid reason or just cause. I strongly feel that after 30 years of residence and now a senior citizen living on a fixed income, this sudden and unexpected situation has definitely created a burden and hardship for me. I’m being displaced from my home of 30 years and I strongly feel that landlords should not be allowed to do this without compensating tenants.” - Carolyn "[PIP] threaten and they lie. They said I owed money but I’ve never been late on my rent. Not in the 27 years I’ve lived here. I’m so angry that they can do this, they shouldn’t be able to get away with it” - Donna Add your name to this petition to let PIP Realty know that the community supports these tenants, and that their attempt to displace these community members is not going unnoticed!",
