"description": "We call on the Newark City Council to introduce and pass a ceasefire resolution on February 21 at their next City Council meeting. Community members and organizations from across Newark have signed on to a resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and end to Israel's genocide of the Palestinian people. The resolution calls for an end to Israel's war crimes, which the International Court of Justice and a U.S. District Court Judge has deemed is credibly genocidal. Israel has displaced over 2 million people and has brought millions more to the brink of starvation while raining down bombs on Gazan homes, churches, cultural institutions, and universities--Israel has committed all these heinous crimes all while maiming and murdering more than 20,000 people, mostly children. Despite the bloodshed, our country wants to give billions more to Israel to commit war crimes against, even while Israeli officials have made their genocidal intent clear (Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says of the Palestinian people, "We are fighting human animals."). The violence must stop now, and the United States must stop funding this violence. In New Jersey alone, 145 million dollars of our taxpayer money goes towards funding this genocide It is up to progressive cities such as Newark to stand on the right side of history and call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza NOW. By passing a ceasefire resolution, Newark can inspire the state and other progressive communities to speak out against the genocide. Newark would join other progressive cities such as Oakland and Chicago in this call for peace. In a time when so few speak up for what is right, we know that Newark can be a city that stands on the right side of justice. On February 7th, Newark community members, representing a broad coalition of social justice, student, legal, and labor organizations, marched from Rutgers-Newark Campus to City Hall to call for Newark City Council to pass a ceasefire resolution. The February 7 march was endorsed by the People’s Organization for Progress, Newark Water Coalition, CAIR-NJ, Black Alliance for Peace, Rutgers Alumni for Palestine, NNJ-DSA, AFSCME Local 2298, Rutgers AAUP-AFT, Ceasefire Now New Jersey, RU4PAL, Rutgers Students for Justice in Palestine- Newark, Rutgers Newark National Lawyers Guild, Rutgers Newark Muslim Law Student Association, NJ Peace Action, Pax Christi NJ, and Teaching While Muslim, among others.",
