"description": "It is time to remove cops from schools. Students of Northern Virginia deserve to be protected from the insidious nature of policing and surveillance in their education. Forcing police interactions with students only contributes to a school to prison pipeline and the criminalization of Black, brown, and other marginalized students. The Boards of Supervisors in Fairfax, and Prince William Counties and the County Board in Arlington need to remove funding for School Resource Officers (SROs) in their FY 2022 budgets. We demand that consideration of any reallocation of funding be driven by community decision-making through robust, multilingual, and accessible community engagement. This engagement could lead to an increase in the number of counselors, psychologists, nurses, and enrichment programs. It could also be used to improve food access, language justice programs, restorative justice programs, and other mechanisms to eliminate student contact with the criminal justice system. Our Youth deserve #CareNotCops. We stand in solidarity with students across Northern Virginia, and the Defund NoVAPolice Coalition who are calling for true safety in their learning environments. We believe that police officers have no place in schools because: Police don't make kids more safe. Their presence increases the potential for state violence against youth in education settings. Regular police presence in schools results in increased arrests for incidents that should otherwise be addressed by school administrators, violence interruptors, or social emotional support staff. Across Northern Virginia, minority students and students with disabilities of all ethnicities are disproportionately impacted by the presence of police officers in schools. We must focus on long-term solutions that reduce violence and nurture young people by addressing root causes. Police presence in schools is a form of social control over student movement, associations, and behavior, which can be effectively managed by school staff and administrators. Students need care and resources to support their learning and well-being. Funding for SRO programs can be reinvested into projects and models that build care and restorative practices into our school communities.
