"description": "Paul LePage, the racist governor of Maine who brags that he was "Trump before Trump," last week attacked civil rights icon John Lewis and said Lewis owes the Republican Party a "thank you" for ending slavery.[1] LePage then said the NAACP owes all white people an apology.[2] John Lewis helped lead the March on Washington in 1963. He was beaten by the KKK during the Freedom Rides and by Alabama Police while crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge while marching for voting rights. John Lewis has nothing to learn from Paul LePage. That's why I created a petition condemning Paul LePage's outrageous statements. Will you sign my petition--and then share it with as many of your friends as possible? Paul LePage has a long history of racist comments, once referring to black people as "the enemy." He's falsely claimed that 90 percent of drug arrests in Maine are black people.[3] He's evoked some of the ugliest racist stereotypes by claiming that black men from New York come to Maine an "impregnate a young white girl before they leave."[4] In his most recent comments, LePage even made the ludicrous claim that President Rutherford B. Hayes fought Jim Crow--when in fact his election as president literally was the triggering event that allowed Jim Crow to take root in the South. That's like giving George W. Bush credit for ending the Iraq War. Apparently, Paul LePage thinks that because of Trump's election, it's ok now to be openly racist. That's why I created a petition telling Paul LePage that John Lewis has NOTHING to learn from him about American history or civil rights. Will you stand with John Lewis by signing my petition to Paul LePage today?",
