"description": "In every corner of Durham, we are the people who make Duke University and Duke Health System run. We are teachers, graduate students, nurses, clergy, service workers and care workers. We are loyal fans who show up for March Madness. We are taxpayers who support infrastructure across campus. We show up for Duke every single day. Now, we are demanding Duke show up for us. Amid an unprecedented attack on higher education and working communities across the country, we are demanding Duke mount a strong defense and use its vast resources — including its nearly $12 billion endowment — to invest in our future. Duke must preserve the University’s programs, services, jobs and workers’ rights amid federal funding cuts and protect academic freedom, free speech and threats from ICE to international students under the Trump administration. Right now, Duke has a responsibility to do more, not less. As the largest employer in the Triangle, Duke has an opportunity to lead the fight against attacks from Trump and Washington and be a model employer in North Carolina and across universities. This moment calls for a united front of Duke, its students, workers and neighbors fighting together. Instead of investing in our futures, Duke is threatening our jobs. However, Duke has more than enough resources available to not only weather the storm of attacks from Washington but to make long-term investments into Durham’s future. In this crisis moment, working people cannot afford to have Duke turn its back. We have rent to cover and bills to pay. We need Duke to stand with us and fight back. Our new coalition, Durham Rising, brings together Duke students and staff as well as workers and community members from across the city to pave the road for a brighter future. Fundamentally, we are calling on Duke University to show bold leadership by protecting higher education and raising standards across the region through good, union jobs and investing in the workers, neighbors and families who keep the university system running. Durham Rising is demanding: $25/hour Wage Floor: Duke must set an example for universities and institutions everywhere by raising the wage floor to $25/hr. Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) for Durham: Duke must contribute a PILOT to support public schools, educator salaries, affordable housing, public services and city/county worker wages and contribute to a safe, healthy and thriving Durham. Good Union Jobs in Durham: Every job at Duke University and Health System must be a good, union job that can support strong communities throughout the Raleigh-Durham region. Duke must respect the rights of all of its workers to form unions. Fair Labor Standards at Duke: Duke must institute strong protections against wage theft and enforceable standards for working conditions. Duke must also make a commitment not to hire contractors who fail to meet these standards. It takes all of us uniting together, lending our voices and taking action to win the change we need. Sign this petition and demand that Duke University protect higher education, invest in our community and the future of Durham.",
