"description": "This year, the Washington State Legislature can make a huge impact in the lives of developmentally disabled children and families by making natural, adoptive, and stepparents of children under the age of 18 eligible to be paid caregivers.   In Washington State, Medicaid eligible children who meet the criteria for institutional level care can receive these services within their family home. Children are assessed by the state and allocated in-home caregiving hours. Anyone can be hired to work these hours except the parents of minors due to WA state restrictions. Yet, once the child turns 18, WA parents can be employed. Due to the well-documented caregiver shortages in our state and the pervasive lack of accommodations and supports in childcare and school settings, a parent must leave the workforce to provide these caregiving supports unpaid. 1.4 million allocated care hours are unfilled each year because parents can’t find eligible caregivers to hire. Please sign our petition to show your support for Parent Caregivers",
