"description": "Behind bars, without access to family or lawyers, Salvadoran human rights lawyer Ruth López has been held for a year without trial. Ruth is a human rights defender, and anti-corruption advocate who has dedicated her career to fighting for justice in El Salvador. As head of the Anti-Corruption and Justice Unit at Cristosal, a leading regional human rights organization, Ruth exposed government corruption and the abuse of prisoners at CECOT, the mega-prison where Donald Trump sends ICE deportees. Ruth dared to demand that prisoners’ rights be respected, and documented how the Bukele government used state resources to spy on critics, made backroom deals with violent gangs, misused pandemic relief funds, and dismantled democratic institutions. That made Ruth an existential threat to the regime. So without demonstrating any proof of a crime, police arrested her on May 18, 2025. She was initially held at the Traffic Division, but on July 4 was moved to the Izalco Penitentiary Center where she has been held incomunicado, meaning she’s allowed minimal communication with her family or even her lawyers. More than 500 legal and civil society groups have denounced Ruth's detention, and call for her release. Human rights organizations have determined her detention conditions amount to cruel and inhumane treatment. The United States cannot stay silent on this atrocity. Tell Congress: Fight authoritarian repression. Advocate for Ruth López.",
