"description": "We are in the midst of a student debt crisis of unprecedented proportions. 40 million Americans now suffer under the weight of $2 trillion in student debt. The Department of Education should be significantly expanding debt forgiveness, not capping or de-fanging programs that already exist. As it stands, the two programs that allow for student debt forgiveness - the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program and the Pay As You Earn Program - are insufficient to address the growing student debt crisis. PSLF only forgives loans after 10 years, and PAYE after 20-25 years. This is not enough. And it gets worse. Not only do the existing loan forgiveness programs take at least a decade to kick in, Obama proposed to cap both programs in his 2015 budget. There’s always money to be had for war, for irresponsible banks, and for corporate subsidies. We’ve had enough. It’s time to bail out the students for once. ",
