These sound like common-sense safety measures to protect workers, but did you know many employers aren’t legally required to provide any of them? All working people deserve to return home safely after every shift, but the Trump regime is making it harder. HOW DID WE GET HERE: → In 2024, after years of worker-led organizing, the Biden-Harris administration proposed a rule to protect workers from extreme heat. The rule would require employers to evaluate heat risks and provide essentials like water and rest breaks. The rulemaking process for federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) work standards can be lengthy. The process extended into Trump’s second term. Worker safety is not a priority for the current regime. → After his election, Trump installed ultra-wealthy corporate executives, including former Amazon executives and shareholders, into government leadership. Despite heat being the leading cause of weather-related workplace deaths, a corporate takeover of this magnitude means profits are prioritized over workers&#x27; safety. → In June of 2026, the U.S. experienced the hottest June on record. Instead of finding solutions to protect workers from a climate crisis fueled by corporate greed, Congressmen like Republican Representative Mark Messmer from Indiana are moving legislation that would prevent OSHA from implementing the heat safety rule (or gutting the workforce that can enforce similar protections). Messmer claims water breaks and rest would be an “unnecessary” burden for employers. WHO’S SIDE ARE THEY ON: Despite anti-worker politicians and Trump’s installation of corporate thugs into our government, heat safety can and should be enforced. The Acting Secretary of Labor, Keith Sonderling, has the legal authority to finalize the heat safety rule and advise David Keeling, the head of OSHA, to enforce it. But convincing them to stand with workers won’t be easy. That’s where you come in. Sonderling, Acting Secretary of Labor, has a history of voting against safety protections. During Trump’s first term, Sonderling was appointed Vice Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), where he voted against the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA). The PWFA eventually passed, requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers. However, companies like Amazon have been found to violate the PWFA standards and continue to endanger mothers and their children. Meanwhile, Keeling is a former safety executive at UPS and Amazon. During his time as an executive, each company was cited for major workplace safety issues, injuries, and even deaths. Remind these “leaders” they answer to working people everywhere, not corporate interests.
