"description": "The City of Houston is voting to approve the fiscal year 2021 budget on June 10. The Houston Police Department is slated to get almost ONE BILLION DOLLARS next year—An increase of 3.29% to their budget. The budget for policing alone makes up nearly one-fifth (17.2 percent) of the total budget for the city of Houston. More of this money needs to go toward resources that help, rather than hurt people. Letitia Plummer, Council Member at Large, has put out a proposal that would reallocate police funding, train police in de-escalation tactics, ban chokeholds, and fund an independent police oversight board. The purpose of this petition is to show our support for Council Member Plummer as white Houstonians, who work for racial justice; and to voice, in solidarity with People of Color, demands for greater police oversight and accountability.",
