	"description": "At-will employment means your employer can fire you with no notice and no explanation. At-will employment leaves workers open to bullying by employers, which can include pressure to take unwanted overtime or on-call shifts, tolerate demeaning or discriminatory behavior, or keep quiet about unsafe conditions. Just Cause Employment means employers, not just workers, are held accountable. Under Just Cause Employment, your employer must give you a good reason, in writing, for termination, along with the opportunity to fix the problem they identify. Just Cause gives workers the security we deserve in our workplace, and encourages employers to focus on developing, rather than replacing, workers. Have you ever been… Fired without advance written notice? Fired for no reason… or for a bad reason? Fired without getting a chance to fix the problem? Fired based on data from intrusive electronic monitoring? Laid off for “ financial reasons” when business seems to be doing just fine? You’re not alone. Every year, hundreds of workers in Ithaca are put out of a job with no warning, no transparency, and no accountability on the part of employers. Ithaca can do better. Ithaca’s workers deserve better. We deserve a system where employers, not just workers, are held accountable. Just Cause employment can make that a reality. What would Just Cause legislation do in Ithaca? Require employers to provide 30 days notice of any proposed discharge and a written explanation for the discharge. Implement a progressive discipline framework to give employees the opportunity to receive feedback and improve work performance before being discharged. Require employers to provide proof of economic hardship before they lay workers off. Restrict the use of electronic monitoring (e.g. movement tracking, productivity tracking devices, etc.) in discipline or discharge decisions. Establish a city commission to enforce these rules, including by referring complaints to the city attorney for legal action. Your story matters, and sharing it can inspire others to speak out, too.
