"description": "TIRED OF PAYING HUNDREDS IN PARKING FEES AND STILL NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND A CONVENIENT SPOT? The elimination of parking spaces on the University of Maryland campus is reaching all time highs. Along with it campus administration, is proposing to eliminate the cap on parking fees. Faculty, staff and students will be forced to search for costly commuting options. In addition, residents on campus will be denied parking spaces all together in the coming months, according to the Department of Transportation 2015-2016 Annual Report. PARKING FEES ARE A NO GO The Department of Transportation Services currently received over $9.2 million dollars in parking registration fees from faculty, staff and students and an additional $42,000 dollars from the Sustainable UMD fund endorsed by university president, Dr. Wallace Loh. Let's not forget about the $3 million dollars in visitors parking, $466,000 in special events services, and $129,000 in parking violations. With all of the money circulating on campus over the past 5 years, campus administrators still insist on eliminating vehicle parking spaces, lifting the 7% cap on parking fees and increasing bike parking. While bike parking sounds like an innovative approach to reducing the carbon footprint of campus, it does not take into account that most commuters can't afford to live the surrounding communities where cycling to campus is a reasonable alternative. Also, existing shuttles routes do not accomodate the demands of working commuters nor to they serve many of the communities for which many working commuters reside. Hello? I'm a commuter and I don't live in Columbia. The employees at the University of Maryland are tired of being price gouged by campus administration while trying to make a living wage. With parking registration fees climbing up to $1,000 yearly and the lack of access to campus buildings due to transportation deserts created by the Department of Transportation Services enough is enough. The employees at the University of Maryland, collectively, AFSCME Local 1072 are leading the way in abolishing parking fees for all but we can't do it without you. If you are a faculty, staff, student or visitor and you are tired of being marginalized by the transportation deserts on campus, or tired of being price gouged by excessing parking fees, you will want to sign this petition.",
