	"description": "We have to stop keeping people in jail just because they’re poor! The use of pretrial detention and money bail has contributed to the 500% explosion in U.S. jail populations over the last forty years. Tonight around 600,000 people will sleep in a local jail, even though over 75% of them, or about 462,000 people, have not been convicted of any crime. Here in New York State, we have lost the lives of over 14 people in pre-trial detention in the past 9 months alone. Repeatedly, reports have documented the inhumane and unlivable conditions incarcerated people are subject to. Just last week, another person lost their life in pre-trial detention. As Governor Hochul develops her 2023 Executive Budget, we demand funding to prevent these unnecessary and unjust deaths at the hands of the jail system. We must end this crisis and ensure we provide more funding for pre-trial services. Our unjust system of keeping people in cages because they are poor is the result of the intertwined forces of racism and capitalism. We must raise our voices and fight for what is right.",
