"description": "Sign on to Amnesty International & Women Cross DMZ’s Petition to Lift the Ban on Christine Ahn's Travel to South Korea! On October 30, 2024, Christine Ahn, Women Cross DMZ Founder and Co-Director, was barred from boarding an Asiana Airlines flight from Honolulu to the Republic of Korea. Ahn was on her way to deliver the keynote address at the International Youth Peace Forum in Gyeonggi Province, set to be hosted by the provincial government on November 2, 2024. The Asiana agent informed Ahn that, after checking with R.O.K. immigration authorities, they were not authorized to provide Ahn with a boarding pass. Ahn was told that the R.O.K. government official provided no explanation or justification, only that Ahn was denied entry into South Korea. We are outraged that Ahn – a respected Korean American peace activist – has been barred from traveling to South Korea without any reason or justification, which is a violation of her human rights. This restriction prevents her from participating in an important international civil society forum and violates her right to defend human rights. Ahn founded Women Cross DMZ and helped launch the Korea Peace Now! transnational feminist peace campaign along with the Nobel Women’s Initiative, WILPF, and a coalition of South Korean women’s peace groups. She is the recipient of numerous awards in recognition of her peace work, including the 2022 Social Activist Medal from the Nobel Peace Laureates, 2020 U.S. Peace Prize, and the 2020 Rotary International Peace Award. At a time when the Korean Peninsula is on the brink of renewed fighting and the two Koreas are embroiled in the Russia-Ukraine War, we need more voices calling for peace and diplomacy and more people-to-people engagement. We urge President Yoon to protect the human rights of freedom of speech, assembly, and movement by lifting the travel ban on Ahn. Read the full press release here.",
