"description": "The cost of public transport is a huge barrier to social inclusion. It means that many people are struggling to access work and education, maintain important social networks and family connections, take part in leisure or community activities or carry out caring commitments. We think that these are basic things that should be available to everyone, as a public service, regardless of income. We are also in a climate emergency. In the UK, road traffic is by far the biggest source of the emissions driving the problem. Solving this can't just mean switching to electric cars - many of us can't afford this anyway. It also means making it much easier for people to live their lives without relying on a car. Fewer cars on the road means fewer accidents, cleaner air and faster journeys. Fare-free public transport already operates in several cities internationally, including Albuquerque, Aubagne, Belgrade, Dunkirk, Kansas City, Kriviy Rih, Luxemburg, Tallinn and more than 130 municipalities in Brazil. Similar campaigns are running in London and Glasgow. In Greater Manchester there is already some fare-free public transport. We have two fare-free bus services in the city centre. Many young, old and disabled people, along with many public transport workers, already have some fare-free travel. We want fare-free travel for everyone in Greater Manchester, and we welcome all steps towards this which protect jobs and working conditions in the context of an improved, expanded and more accessible service. Under mayor Andy Burnham, Manchester became the first city to bring buses under public control through the franchising system. A new mayor is a new opportunity to go further, with universal free access to travel aroud the city and a service that works for everyone. We want her to make freedom of travel for all one of her first priorities.",
