"description": "Mayor Bowser is finalizing her budget for the coming year. We need you to raise your voice to ensure that she puts ending chronic homelessness at the top of her to-do list for her second term. As long as 1,540 of our neighbors and 177 families have been denied the dignity of a home for years, DC cannot reach its full potential as a world class city. On a given night, 7,500 of our neighbor’s experience homelessness, including 1,500 people who have been homeless for over a year. 70% of people experiencing homelessness are people of color and 76% of women experiencing homelessness have faced violence. Homelessness is unjust, and it is immoral. We will not rest until Mayor Bowser fulfills her commitment to end long-term, and all forms of homelessness, in DC. We call on Mayor Bowser to create a moral budget and to end long-term homelessness by the end of her second term. To do this, she must invest $35.5 million in the upcoming budget to house 1,140 individuals and 177 families.  This represents less than one half of one percent of DC’s overall $14.5 billion budget. Ending chronic homelessness saves lives, saves tax payer money, and provides DC’s most disenfranchised residents with the safety and dignity of a home. During her first term, Mayor Bowser invested more in housing than previous administrations. During the same time period, 191  of our neighbors died without housing. These deaths are not just tragic; they were preventable. Mayor Bowser must use her budget as a moral document and choose to end chronic homelessness and save lives. Housing is the linchpin resource for a thriving community and the bedrock for health, education and employment. When we invest in housing, everybody wins. Sign our petition to show Mayor Bowser that DC residents demand an end to chronic homelessness. We know that ending long-term homelessness is possible - and we won’t stand for anything less. Simply adding your name is a powerful way to raise your voice and use your power to ensure that DC ends chronic homelessness.",
